WHO ARE WE?

Ross Candlish

I was born in Edinburgh and started collecting at the age of five and would pester my local travel agent for the foreign stamps he received on his mail. This interest was fuelled by my godfather who was a mining surveyor operating all over Africa and would send Christmas and birthday cards and presents bearing the stamps of whatever country he was working in. Later, when he noticed I was using stamp albums to store the stamps he decided I was interested enough to take over his own collection.

In my early teens I actually started to BUY stamps, firstly from my local pharmacist who devoted an entire window of his chemist shop to this diversification. Eventually, I would travel into town and visit one of two stamp shops. I now realised I could not afford to collect all countries and started to collect Great Britain only.

Later teens brought new interests: girls and rugby (not always in that order). On leaving school I started with a firm of chartered surveyors - it took them seven years to find me out! I spent far more energy playing for Watsonians Rugby than work!

I left Edinburgh in 1970 to pursue a career in stamp dealing and learned the ropes in one of the then largest dealers in the country, based in Bristol. This gave me the opportunity to handle major collections and meet other knowledgeable dealers and collectors. I was also lucky enough to travel the world representing the company at various international shows. I still played rugby, now for Clifton, but after several dislocations of the shoulder retired to third fifteen outings!

I had always had an ambition to be my own boss and after much soul searching decided it was time to go my own way.

CANDLISH McCLEERY LTD was established in 1975 with myself as a founding director. The company is now wholly owned by myself and my wife, Andrea.

Originally with offices in Bristol CANDLISH McCLEERY LTD has operated predominately as a mail-order business dealing in the postage stamps of Great Britain 1840 to 1970 approx.

Having got married in the early 1980s to Andrea, rugby was given up although I still played squash (highlights - being thrashed in the French, Greek and Swiss open championships). We moved to Worcestershire and now have settled on a farm that has been in the family for over 50 years.

WHAT DO WE SELL?

Although we deal in all aspects of stamp collecting during this period, we have several specialities. The reigns of King George V, King Edward VIII and King George VI offer the greatest depth and include essays, proofs, colour trials, shades, controls and cylinder numbers, varieties, perforation types, cancelled and specimen overprints, booklets, booklet panes, coil leaders, etc.

We also stock extensive stocks of the reigns of Queen Victoria, King Edward VII and Queen Elizabeth II (especially booklets and booklet panes).

Every month we publish a list. Visit our MONTHLY LIST page and you will get a flavour of 200 plus items selected from stock and updated on or near the 1st of every month.

Literature. We are the publishers of The Philatelic Review (1977-1982) - 21 issues. Full of articles relating to Great Britain philately, the Review included much original research and was generously illustrated throughout. Back numbers are available at £2 each and complete sets at £35 (both including inland postage) overseas postage extra. From time to time we also publish a more comprehensive King George V to King George VI list (sent free of charge to spending customers). We have an extensive library and sometimes can offer out-of-print stamp publications.
